David
continued to raise the same produce as his father.
However, as it became increasingly difficult for David
to support his family, Mary decided to grow strawberries
on their front porch. As demand grew, David built a
small market out of 4 posts and a roof and began to sell
a variety of fruits and vegetables. Through several
expansions, Duffield's market has expanded into the
large store that it currently is including fresh
produce, an in-store bakery and a deli.
The
Duffield family still owns the 130 acres, which has now
been enrolled in farmland preservation to ensure that it
will always remain a farm. The Duffields raise over 35
varieties of vegetables and fruits, including peaches,
strawberries, nectarines, and the always-popular Jersey
sweet corn and tomatoes. Due to the growth of
neighborhoods surrounding the farm, almost all of the
produce that the Duffields raise is sold directly
through the farm market. The Duffield family has been
farming for almost 80 years and hopes to continue to do
so for many generations to come!
